The primary mission of this California non-profit organization is to promote literacy, communication skills, and creativity in young people through drama-based activities. Along with classroom programs, Playwrights Project organizes the annual California Young Playwrights Contest for writers under the age of 19, and professionally produces the winning scripts each year in association with San Diego's Old Globe Theatres.
Playwrights Project was founded in 1985 by Executive Director Deborah Salzer. Trained in acting and dance, Ms. Salzer is a graduate of Oberlin College and the Bank Street College of Education. Before moving to California from New York, Ms. Salzer taught elementary school, trained teachers, and directed an inner-city arts program in Harlem. In addition to creating curriculum and training teaching artists for Playwrights Project, Ms. Salzer has produced the premieres of more than 90 plays, along with the award-winning television production of Simply Maria, or the American Dream by Josefina López. Playwrights Project Teaching Artists, all theatre professionals, are affiliated with the leading theatres and universities in San Diego and Los Angeles.
Ms. Salzer is the author of a curriculum unit which introduces playwriting to middle and high school students. For information on Stage Write, published by Interact, visit www.interact-simulations.com.
